In this episode Donna and Jay talk to Carla about her service, MST, being incarcerated and finding purpose in her life. Due to her life experiences and personal knowledge of the judicial system, Carla brings an entirely different level of credibility to the conversation. Her mission to help others who are struggling both inside the prison walls and out is transparent and genuine. Carla talks about the importance of the Veteran Treatment Court Program and how things might have been very different had she had this service available prior to her 20 year incarceration.

What good is a program unless it is effective? After interviewing the team members of the Veteran Treatment Court, it only seems appropriate to interview someone that has been through the program.
Jay and Donna were honored to have a chat with US Army Veteran, George Wolf. After slipping into the service at age 16, he thoroughly enjoyed his job as a 13E (part of a field artillery unit). He left the military in 1988 and after the death of his parents in his early 20s, he struggled with mental health on and off for 28 years. In 2016, he found himself arrested on 5 charges and facing jail time. Through the efforts of a Colonel that believed in him, he was given the opportunity to enter the newly established Veteran Treatment Court.
Wolf, as he prefers to be called, openly discusses his struggles, the challenges of the Veteran Treatment Court, how tough love saved his life, and what he is doing now to give back.

Most everyone is familiar with a probation officer. Hopefully, most people know them on a personal or peer level versus a professional level. However, if you are going to need a probation officer, you would be lucky to have someone like Yenaiv.
Donna and Jay chat with Yenaiv Lopez regarding her role at the Veteran Treatment Courts probation officer, the challenges she faces as a younger probation officer, how she connects with the participants in the VTC, and why she is passionate about this work.
Yenaivs Bio

Prior to her work as a probation officer, she worked in the office of a construction company.

As Veterans, we are all aware of the difficulties transition poses. Sometimes, Veterans are coming out with unhealed trauma so severe it is leading them to make decisions that result in legal issues.
Fortunately, the civilian legal system saw that these Veterans were struggling from military trauma and decided to offer them a second chance. In 2013, the Veteran Treatment Court was established. Since then, most counties in every state have implemented this program.
In 2015, Judge Stephens saw the need and established a VTC for Comal County in Texas.
Donna and Jay talk with Judge Stephens about Veteran Treatment Court, what led him to bring it to his county, how it is structured, and what the future looks like. Youll also learn a few fun facts about Judge Stephens throughout the podcast. Trust us, youll be surprised.

"Your life does not have to be defined by the things you go through, but really what defines you is what you grow through."~ Tami
Resiliency is not developed during calm times. Resiliency occurs when you are in the midst of the storm and have no other option but to get through it. It is only when you reflect, you see how much you have grown.
Tami Imlay has definitely grown through many things. The toughest one for her and her family was 28 March 2012. Dee Imlay, her childhood sweetheart, husband, and father of their two children, and fighter pilot, was killed during deployment. Tami tapped into the skills she acquired as a former military officer to navigate herself and her children through the murky waters of grief.
Jay and Donna sit down with Tami and talk about her journey from tragedy to triumph. She talks about how she took her grief and hardship and channeled it into her current coaching and podcasting business and offers hope for others going through similar circumstances.
Tamis BIO
Tami Imlay is the owner of Tami Marie Coaching and Host of Her Restored Spirit Podcast. Tami is an Air Force Veteran and an Air Force Widow. She is Mom to two amazing teenagers. She believes that there is opportunity and hope in every circumstance and hardship and knows that it is her God-given purpose to help women discover their strengths, uncover the best version of themselves, and create a life they are excited about. Tami took knowledge is power to another level as she guides people to understand why they do what they do and how to remove old stories or habits that are keeping them stuck. Blending her knowledge and experience as a therapist, project management and leadership in the Air Force, and her passion for changing the future, she has stepped into her God-given purpose as a Breakthrough Coach. As a Master Certified NeuroCoach and a Master Certified Enneagram coach, Tami helps women breakthrough old patterns and beliefs and create passion for the next season of life.

On 27 Nov 2006, Ginger Gilbert Ravella had the run pulled out from under her and her world came crashing down. Her husband, Major Troy Gilbert, was an F16 pilot from the 309th Fighter Wing, Luke AFB, Arizona. He was deployed to Balad and during a close air-support mission to a special operations forces about 40 miles north his plane crashed. Insurgents took the body as a war trophy and it would be 10 years before he was found and brought back home. Ginger was left to raise 5 children, all under the age of 9, and rebuild their lives.
Jay and Donna sit down with Ginger as she tells her story on what it took to come back after having her world turned upside down; what she is doing now to give back; and what advice she has for those that have walked in similar shoes.
Gingers Bio
Ginger Gilbert Ravella is a military wife and widow, mother of five, stepmother of two, writer and international speaker. At 36 years old, she faced the sudden tragic loss of her college-sweetheart husband in Operation Iraqi Freedom and the horrors that quickly followed. Her late husband, Major Troy Gilbert, an Air Force F-16 pilot, gave his life while saving over twenty Special Operation soldiers, defining a true American war hero. His remains were tragically taken from the crash site by Iraqi insurgents, which ultimately led to the most unprecedented and captivating story of recovery in U.S. military history. Major Gilbert left behind five beautiful children, all under the age of 9 years old. Gingers openly genuine testimony of wrestling with God in the midst of despair and depression resonates with those who question their faith and future in the face of tragedy. Their private pain became front-page news time and time again over the amazing ten-year journey of bringing Troy home to U.S. soil.

Ever since Patrick Kelly can remember, he has always had the mindset to do better. He attributes a lot of this mindset to being brought up in a life of scarcity, and a grandfather that planted a seed of resiliency.
It was his words that carried him through numerous difficult situations with grace and honor. Those words that still carry him through every trying situation he encounters.
In 2017, he was overweight, wheelchair bound, and on a multitude of pain medication to manage his chronic pain. He was at one of his lowest points in life. Over the next year he made a choice to do better and managed to get off everyone of his pain medications.
Join Donna and Jay, as they talk to Patrick about what led him to the USMC; how he overcame numerous injuries that eventually led him to a wheelchair; and how his athleticism, martial arts, Marines, and the words his grandfather shared with him were all contributors to his resilient mindset.
Patricks Bio
Patrick grew up in Plattsburg, NY and was very active as a marathoner, body builder, and martial arts. He served actively in the Marines from 1977 - 1985. He has been involved with martial arts since he was a child. He is currently a 5th dang in Qwan Ki Do and can teach the martial art in 30 countries.
He is involved with numerous events to include recumbent bike cycling competitions, skiing, sled hockey, boating, and archery. For the past year he has been a participant in adaptive cycling with Operation Comfort and actively competing in cycling events. He has been married to his amazing wife Andi since 2019.

Weve all heard the saying Life is about choices. Although it is tempting to point a finger to negative experiences, bad people, or peer pressure, it is still up to us to pick the path to move forward on their journey.
James Eastland is a Marine, Veteran, ultramarathoner, and entrepreneur. However, he really should be a statistic. His biological father was sent to jail when he was 11 and released when James was 46. He had a few years with an engaged step dad, but that was lost when his mom divorced him. He lived in the projects with a single, struggling mother and older brother. During these years he and his brother survived severe childhood abuse.
It was a few caring people, a pastor and a youth group that helped guide him on the right path. He watched his older brother make choices with outcomes leading him to murder their grandmother and spending the majority of his life in jail. It only reinforced his choices to make the best life possible.
Join Jay and Donna as they talk with James about his childhood, his journey into adulthood, and the choices that led him to where he is currently in his life. They will focus on resilience, discuss how each of us have the ability to choose the life we envision, and the work he is doing to give back to his community.
Listen to the end to learn how you can get involved with James's fundraising event https://www.facebook.com/groups/BattleoftheFives

In 2003, American Airline attendant, Janis Roznowski, started flying Soldiers and Marines in and out of Kuwait City. During this time she was deeply impacted watching them come home injured and ill. Feeling the need to give back, Janie started visiting wounded service members at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany and later Brooks Army Medical Center in San Antonio.
In 2004, she started the non-profit, Operation Comfort. What started out as a simple gesture to give back has morphed into supporting wounded warriors and their families through emergency financial assistance and adaptive sports.
Due to family health issues, Janis was unable to stay at the helm. However, with the help of executive director, Dianna Sisnero, and her team, Operation Comfort is in its 19th year, and continues to run strong.
Join Jay and Donna and they talk with Dianna about the mission of Operation Comfort, the gratification watching warriors overcome their adversity, and challenges of running a non-profit on a shoestring budget.
Diannas Bio

What could be better than fun in the sun?! Having fun in the sun while supporting Veterans, is what!
In 2005, two friends, Wes Garnett and Seth Warnick, watched the first troops come home from Afghanistan and Iraq, and were motivated to help. What started as taking a few wounded service members out on a boat, has turned into Operation Float a Soldier, an all volunteer 501(c)3 dedicated to giving respite time to the soldier and family. They do this through water recreational sports - fishing, boating, jet skiing, water sports, or just relaxing in Canyon Lake. And it wouldnt be a complete day without a good ol Texas BBQ lunch.
Donna goes solo, as Jay was out sick, with Wes to talk about Operation Comfort, the journey of starting up the non-profit, and how he and his team keeps the non-profit running over the last 17 years.
Wess Bio
Born 1962 in San Antonio TX, Wes oined the Navy in 1980 as an Cryptologic Technician Collector and became adept at decrypting and copying Morse Code. He got out in 1984 and worked in several different fields until going to Texas A&M and graduating with an Electronics Engineering degree in 1988.
Wes started working in IT in 1988 and worked towards several different certifications and is now the IT Systems Engineering Supervisor at GVTC Communications. Before working with GVTC, Wes did some work with the government as a contractor. Married to Letty Garnett, he has 1 step son and 2 sons with his wife.

There is a saying, entrepreneurs would give up a 40 hour job to work 80 hours for themselves. Starting up a new business can easily take many more hours than a cushy 9-5 job. But entrepreneurs would happily put in the extra hours to be in full control of their lives.
What about the entrepreneur that owns multiple businesses? How do they keep up? In this episode, Donna and Jay talk to Mike Johnson - veteran, owner of a print supply business, operator of Mr. Fireworks, and home building consultant. They sit down to discuss how Mike got into each business, how he manages all three, and learning to go with the ebb and flow that comes with business ownership.
Mikes Bio
Mike Johnson has lived in the Bulverde/Spring Branch area since 2001. After moving every 1-3 years the first 40 years of his life (as an Army brat through High School, then the next 22 years for his own career in the Air Force) Mike has enjoyed setting his roots in Texas the last 28 years. Having developed a myriad of skills as an Intelligence Analyst and Senior NCO (retired Senior Master Sergeant/E-8), Mike chose to be his own boss as a civilian. He currently owns San Antonio Print Supplies (24 years), operates the Bulverde Mr W Fireworks Superstore (10 years), and is a home-building consultant for Built Green Custom Homes (2 years). As a professional networker and connector, much of his time is spent helping others in the community. Mike has been very active in the BSB Chamber of Commerce since 2013, to include being Chairman of the Board for 2017 and 2019. He has served as Vice Chair of the BSB Chamber Foundation from 2019 to present. He serves on the board of several other non-profit organizations, including Acacia Medical Mission. Mike currently attends Hillside Fellowship in Bulverde/Spring Branch.

Do you have an entrepreneurial itch? Do you see a gap in the market that you feel you can fill? Are you just tired of having a boss or grinding out the 9-5? Are you staying at home to raise your children and thinking about ways to bring in a little extra income?
Starting a business from the ground up is no easy feat. We often hear people throw out the statistic that the average business start-up lasts only 5 years. But wait, that is not every start up! There are start-ups that have been and are successful. What does it take to break from the 5 yr statistic?
Donna and Jay bring on guest host Karen Sroka, veteran and owner of My Scratch Offs. They discuss how her business came to fruition, what it took to get it off the ground, the trials and tribulations, and what she has learned during her 14 years of owning and operating the business.
Karens Bio
Karen Sroka is an entrepreneur and the Founder and Creative Executive of My Scratch Offs. She was born and raised in Maryland. She enlisted in the Air Force at the age of 19. In the Air Force she worked as a Medical and Aeromedical Evacuation Technician. After the Air Force she chose to return to school full time, at Allan Hancock and Excellsior College, and stay home to raise her 2 daughters Madison (17) and Molly (14). While Molly was still an infant is when My Scratch Offs was created. Her love of graphic design is what spurred the idea to create My Scratch Offs. A company that started in 2008 to bring to the consumer market little-known scratch off products. In 14 years, she, and her small staff, have built a physical and online business presence that is rivalled by few. Karen grew the business in her home for the first 4 years and then moved the business into commercial space, where she remains today.
Karen lives in Belleville, Illinois with her daughters Madison and Molly and dog Bella. She enjoys spending time with her daughters, reading, social activities, outdoor activities, spending time with family and friends, traveling and graphic design.

Did you know the DoD has a program that allows any service member, with commanders approval, to do an internship if they are within 6 months of separation? The Skillbridge Program was developed in 2009 to help connect service members with industry to get real world civilian experience and skills.
Theron Van Meter is a 21 yr retired Air Force Red Horse civil engineer. After 6 duty assignments and multiple deployments he was ready to move on to his next adventure. Him and his wife decided to move back to her hometown area of San Antonio. Before retiring he decided to take advantage of the Skillbridge program.
Theron joins Jay and Donna to talk about the program; the process to participate in the program; how it helped him transition from military to civilian life; and how it gave him the skills to start his own home inspection business.

As Donna and Jay continue their entrepreneur series, they explore the world of franchises. In 2021 there were over 750,000 franchises in the US and it is expected to grow to close to 800,000 by the end of 2022! That equates to almost $800 billion in revenue and giving 8 million people jobs.
When we think of franchises, we may immediately think of the food industry - McDonalds, Chik-a-fila, Taco Bell, etc. However, food only accounts for only a little over 25% of the franchising industry. There are a host of other sectors to choose from. Best of allyou do not have to start off as an expert to own and operate a franchise.
Join Donna and Jay, as they talk to Gary Chernow, a franchise recruiter, who specializes in ensuring the franchise is suited for the person. He joins them to discuss all aspects of franchising - from researching franchises to what it takes to launch one; and why Veterans are an optimal fit for franchising.

So, whether you are the first time business owner looking for that perfect franchise match, or the seasoned entrepreneur looking to diversify your business portfolio, Integrity Business Options will be ready to guide, consult and explore all the options available to you.
Our company is a Member of the International Franchise Professionals Group (IFPG) and will bring a host of resources to assist you in your search. It is incredible to realize there are over 40,000 veteran focused non-profits. The heartbreaking part is the majority of them have a lifespan of 1 year! So many people have altruistic intentions, only to find themselves overwhelmed with the business side needed to keep the nonprofit running.
Donna and Jay bring in guest host Michelle Lang - veteran spouse, mom, and founder of the nonprofit, Veteran Help Point. They discuss why Veteran Help Point was launched, what it took to start it, and tips to think about before starting a nonprofit.
Michelle Lang has been a military spouse for about 6 years. She graduated college with a bachelors degree in Business/Sports Management and went on to work in the wellness field as a Community Health and Wellness Coordinator. Here, she helped assess the needs of the community and fill them by finding programs to implement. She left that job in 2015 to join her now husband in Fort Drum and began struggling to find meaningful work again.
Shortly after her husband transitioned from the military in 2019, they were made aware of the severe gap of finding local veteran resources to help her husband and family. Through this struggle, Michelle began to think about a big picture solution to this issue. Their family moved down to Fort Bragg after her husband rejoined Active Duty and that is where Veteran Help Point began in November 2021.
Today Michelle advocates for military spouses and veterans by connecting them to local resources they need while building the database of local resources through Veteran Help Point.

Coaching is an art. It is vastly different from mentoring and consulting. Donna and Jay talk with Jays Coach Cynthia Restivo, executive coach, entrepreneur and author, about what coaching is and is not, her discovery of coaching, the benefits of coaching, and when people should consider it. They even touch a little on how coaching impacted Jay in his professional and personal life.
"You have served, you have you put on your brave, you put on your courage and you served your country faithfully, and it was scary and you faced a lot of things, but as you transition out, it's time for you to honor yourself and put your brave and your courage on to invest in yourself so that you can live out the rest of your days with the honor and dignity. Fight for yourself, your life and for your personal legacy as well as you did for our country. Lay your life down for you." ~ Cynthia Restivo
Cynthia is an executive coach and the founder of Dynamic Perspectives, Inc., a professional coaching/consulting firm serving leaders seeking personal and professional growth. She is the author of her new book, Stuck in the Wrong Story--Step Out of Shame into the Life God Intended (Bold Vision Books). Cynthia holds two coaching certifications, certified by Dr. John C. Maxwell as an executive coach, teacher, and speaker and certified Professional Path Coach Training Institute. She is a member of the International Coaching Federation, ICF. Cynthia graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Education and holds an Associate Degree in Theology. Cynthia takes people from point A to point B, facilitates building strong teams and effective leadership.Cynthia is also the mother of three adult children, a grandmother and makes her home on the Oregon Coast with Vince, her husband of 41 years.

Ahhh mentoring. When you hear the term do you grimace or think fondly of the term? We hear the word used all the time and in many environments. Corporations have mentoring programs, individuals seek mentors, there is formal mentoring and informally mentoring.
According to MentorcliQ:
The statistics show there are benefits in mentoring, and those that have a mentor would agree. However, not as many people are engaging.
In this episode, Donna and Jay have an honest discussion about mentoring - what it looks like in the military versus civilian; informal vs formal mentoring; what successful mentoring looks like; and what their individual experiences were with military mentoring.

It is estimated there are 137,000 volunteers throughout the US. Interestingly, the average age is 42, very similar to the average age of those retiring from a full military career. The VA alone has 25,000 volunteers. Volunteering is a win-win and shows that a person is willing to roll up his or her sleeves and engage where there is a need. Volunteering provides personal gratification both to the person and the community.
In this episode, Donna and Jay share their experiences with volunteering both in and out of the military. They discuss the benefits of volunteering and how it can lead you to your next adventure.
What was your experience with volunteering when you were in the military? Did you volunteer in the military or were you voluntold? Did you currently volunteer now that you are transitioned? Send us an email and tell us about your volunteering experiences at cominghomewell@gmail.com

Transitioning to the civilian world? We all have to do it and it is how we choose to transition that can make or break our success.
In this episode Jay and Donna have a personal discussion on their transition. Jay retired 12 years ago and Donna is just over a year into her transiting from service. Both Jay and Donna talk about their retirement, how they handled the process and what they did (or didnt do) when they left. They discuss how they have moved forward and where they are now.

It is not surprising, during an entire lifetime, most people will experience some form of trauma. In the developmental years, trauma can affect the development of the brain and in adulthood it can rewire processing. When trauma is left untreated, it can have a significant impact on us at unexpected times in our lives. Left untreated, trauma can compound and form into complex trauma. Veterans are at a significantly higher risk for complex trauma.
In this episode Part 2, Donna and Jay continue their discussion with Dr. Connie Siciliano Avila (aka Dr. Connie) to talk about trauma, levels of trauma, trauma responses, treatment for trauma and how family and friends can support their loved ones dealing with trauma.
Bio
Dr. Connie is a Texas Licensed Psychologist and Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor: She has experience in clinical and nonclinical settings, such as a psychiatric hospitals, independent practice, and health & wellness center. She earned her Doctorate degree at Texas Womans University. Her areas of specialized focus include trauma, addiction, family, and diversity issues. She is best known for her work with complex PTSD and dissociative disorders. She has been treating complex trauma since 2005.

By July 1863, the Confederate armys continuing success in battle emboldened General Lee to move the war into the north. While Lee and his troops passed through Maryland into Pennsylvania, Lincoln replaced General Joseph Hooker with General George Meade, who hastily pursued Lee. On the morning of July 1, the two armies finally met outside of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
The Battle of Chancellorsville raged in Virginia May 2 through 6, 1863. Union General Joseph Hooker failed and gave a decisive victory to the Confederates. However, the victory was not a cheerful one for the South. On the night of May 2, Thomas J. Stonewall Jackson and his men, returning from an attack, were fired on by their own Confederate brethren who thought Jacksons group was Union soldiers. Jackson was hit by two bullets in his left arm, which was then amputated. Eight days later Jackson died of complications from pneumonia.
